In accordance with the requirements of The University's Fire & Life Safety Program, a permit is required before the ignition of any open flame on state owned property. Any fire over 3 feet wide and 2 feet in height may be viewed as a bonfire and will need to submit a permit through the Virginia State Fire Marshal Office.
Location - Fires in approved containers shall be permitted, provided that such fires are not less than 25 feet from any structure that includes tents. Extreme caution should be used to prevent the ignition of any nearby trees, foliage, or grassland, vehicles or equipment, or any other object adjacent, above, or below the area of the fire.
● Fire Pit Materials - Fuel for open fires shall consist only of seasoned dry firewood and shall be ignited with a small quantity of paper. Do not use flammable or combustible liquids or gasses, reactive chemicals, rubber, plastics, or other unapproved methods of ignition.
● Barbecues - Commercially purchased charcoal briquettes and lighter fluid are allowed, at no time should wood or vegetation be used in a BBQ Grill.
● Gas Grills - Only commercially purchased grills are allowed on campus. Annual training is required for students wishing to use these devices.
● Attendance - Any open flame shall be constantly attended until the fire is extinguished. At a minimum the permit requestor is expected to be at the permitted event to ensure adherence to the permit conditions.
● Fire suppression - At least one portable fire extinguisher, 10-lb. ABC multi-purpose dry chemical).
● Training - Portable fire extinguisher training is required for those supervising an open flame/burn activity. If you have not received this training, contact EHS at 757-594-8395 or ehs@cnu.edu to request training.
